About
Joshua Wellington Wong is a Los Angeles-based pianist, composer, and educator passionate about innovation and improvisation.Joshua started improvising as a young child on his keyboard at home. In elementary school, Joshua’s piano teacher Erick Garcia introduced him to jazz; Joshua would continue to study the artform in the top ensembles at UCLA, LACHSA, and Colburn. He studied piano performance with renowned pianists Otmaro Ruiz and Tamir Hendelman, and composition with Grammy award-winning artist, Arturo O’Farrill.Joshua shares his knowledge on social media with over 13k followers. He creates educational music content that explores improvisation and piano concepts and shares educational resources. Joshua is inspired by the likes of Herbie Hancock, Gerald Clayton, Sullivan Fortner, Tony Williams, Ambrose Akinmusire, Walter Smith III, and Paul Cornish.Joshua has collaborated and performed with the likes of Kris Bowers, Ben Proudfoot, DJ Khalil, Clayton Cameron, Devin Daniels, Jermaine Paul, Darynn Dean, and YOCOYA. Joshua was also featured in an academy award documentary. He currently performs in the band YOCOYA, which has released two albums influenced by jazz, latin american music, fusion, rock, and more. He also worked as a film composer's assistant for 1908 Scoring Studios, working on projects for Netflix, Waymo, Nutella, and Peter Facinelli.Joshua has performed at the Hollywood Bowl, Dodgers Stadium Centerfield Plaza, LACMA, and Sam First. Other notable performances include a seminar with Herbie Hancock and the US Department of Education and concerts honoring Quincy Jones and Christian McBride. He has won numerous awards in composition, jazz performance, and ensemble playing from DownBeat Magazine, YoungArts, Spotlight, and many other arts foundations.Joshua's debut album Free Play is set to be released in December 2026. Joshua looks for creative ways of playing and he hopes to follow wherever God leads him.
